Some Manatee County Road Crew Has A Great Sense Of Humor
I took many photos of this spot back in the 70′s. As I would leave Sarasota to head to Fort Pierce, I would drive north on HWY 301 then east on, well I think it was HWY 27. Bout a mile out of town, the road dead ended at the old gated entrance to the Manatee Burying Ground, the old cemetery. I couldn’t believe my eyes the first time I saw the intersection. Yup, there it was, a state issued ‘Dead End’ sign.

Two New Mixed Media Pieces at MQC Fine Art Gallery
I presented two new mixed media pieces during Saint Petersburg’s Second Saturday Gallery Walk at the MQC Fine Art Gallery located in the Crislip Arcade, 624 Central Avenue. My recent body of work is entitled, REM Sleep. In this body of work, I am exploring the idea of, at what point is a photograph no longer a photograph. Considering the the history of photography, especially contemporary photography, and the altering of photographs. There has been hand colored photographs, images manipulated by air brushing, altering Polaroid photographs and more recently the printing of digital images on canvas.
Salome Conflicted
Mixed media piece based on a photograph i took in 1978 in my studio on Siesta Key, Florida. A combination of digital printed photographs, torn into 7″x9″ rectangles applied to the canvas and then different techniques of applying acrylic.
Dead Umbrellas on Every Corner
The flight into La Guardia was rough. The pilot came on and informed us that squalls were blowing gusts of 40 to 50 mph. This had been going on for the past 24 hours. He then went on to say that if we weren’t given the OK to land we would divert to a good location… Detroit!!! In the cabin there was dead silence. Well we landed, made it through street flooding on the FDR and finally unpacked the bags from the yellow cab.
I went for a walk about midnight around the upper east side. That’s were I saw the dead and mayhem. On every corner. Piles of blown out umbrellas. Each intersection, on every corner, stashed between streetlight poles and newspaper stands. Thrown in doorways. Cast aside in the gutters. My plan, to get up at 7am as the sun was coming up and document the piles dead umbrellas. But by 7am, NYC’s street cleaners were already out bagging them or putting them in corner trash cans. Take a look at the small b&W portfolio, Dead Umbrellas.
The Awakening of Lazarus
Lazarus was awakened from the dead. This mixed media takes a number of image relating to death and resurrection. the primary image, a person whose face is painted in a traditional death mask. The photo images at the bottom right corner of the painting are from store windows in a Hispanic neighborhood in Los Angeles where religious items, candles, beads, scapulars and statues were sold.
This piece is on canvas. The primary photograph is applied and the canvas is painted with acrylic. Additional images are added using image transfer techniques. Additional acrylic with texture is added. finally the images in the right corner are an under image photo copy with a color transparency image applied over the photocopy.
Mixed media, photography, photo copies and photo transparencies. 36 x 36 x 2
