Beyond The Proof Sheet
Selected Works By
Michael Conway
August 22 – September 26, 2013
at the Rao Musunuru, M.D. Art Gallery
Michael Conway uses photography as a vehicle to explore the after-effect of an image by following a progression from the original photographic image to the finished painting. Whether it’s a negative on a proof sheet or a thumbnail from a digital collection, it all starts with the frame and a long inquiring gaze. Mixed-media materials allow Conway to expand the meaning of an image that opens a whole new world for the viewer to interpret.
About the art: “When I first looked at the individual image that is the foundation for the four seasons of Degradated Shadows, I clearly saw the progression through each panel from winter through fall. The first panel remains black and white—a metaphor for the death or sleep of winter—then the seasons evolve through the addition of color. Two inspirations were Ki-duk Kim’s 2003 film “Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring” and the early photographic work of Doug and Mike Starn.”
In addition to the exhibition of work, Michael will be giving a lecture on September 5th at 5pm on the subject of his show, ‘Beyond the Proof Sheet.’ He will illustrate and discuss the process of taking the image as photographed through the camera and creating a mixed media piece.
