Although each image can be purchased separately, Degradated Shadows is a tetraptych. The series follows the seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. Each piece is 48″ h x 60″w. They are of a photograph taken in the fall of 2010. The piece has been on display as one continuous piece 4’ x 20’. Spring has been sold but the artist can produce this panel to complete the set if desired. Degradated Shadows One Person Show at Salt Creek Artworks

Degradated Shadows was a one person show at Salt Creek Artworks with a preview and reception on February 19, 2011. It is my most recent body of work and consisted of 12 mixed media pieces.

Artist Statement

Street art catches my attention. Stenciled, painted, pasted. What catches my attention even more is how it looks after it starts to fade, rip, tear and fall apart. In Zen, wabi sabi, is a view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of impermanence, also interpreted as beauty in that which may not be considered traditionally beautiful. Degradated Shadows is a collection of images that may not be considered beautiful, but hopefully engaging.

Photography is the foundation of my work. I have always tried to see how far I could push the limits of the “traditional” photographic image. In my Siesta Key studio thirty years ago, I first started trying different ideas of photo collage and simple photo mixed media.

‘Degradated Shodows’ is the culmination of a year’s worth of new work. The image is the foundation. The degradation of the image is the process. The process starts with the surface, either canvass or board. Each surface is coated with gesso for an archival foundation. The images are printed large, torn up and reassembled, and then manipulated by paint, charcoal, different types of texture and encaustic.

Degradated Shadows…Summer is the first of a series of 4 images. The first work being completed is summer. The series will follow the seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. Each piece is 48″ h x 60″w. They are of a photograph taken in the fall of 2010.

The surface the images is adhered to is high grade interior plywood, coated with primer paint and then again coated with gesso. Portions of the surface are altered with a mixture of gel medium and ground pumas. The image is torn into individual rectangles and then applied using acrylic gel medium over the gesso and pumus medium.

Areas of the image are air brushed to add small amounts of color. Additional texture is added to the surface of some areas of the print. The final touch is to sponge color blossoms to the tree.

Studio Shoot with Coe Arthur Younger

Coe Arthur Younger (www.coearthuryoungerphotography.com) and I finished lunch with Bob Barancik (www.bobcreates.com) and headed over to my studio at Salt Creek ARtworks to pick up some things and shoot some portraits that I would use in some media materials. Coe started walking around shooting the studio with using his wide angle lens. We then started goofing around shooting in the darkened studio with a slower shutter speed. Dead Water Horizon

“Dead Water Horizon” 48″h x 72″w Mixed Media Photography. I took this photograph around 1978 while living on Siesta Key, Florida. It was shot on an overcast day facing west out onto the Gulf. I was shooting all these gulls with tri-x with the intention developing the film using dectol which is actually a print developer. It was an experiment to see just how grainy the film would turn out. Sunset Blvd East of Hollywood

“Sunset Blvd East of Hollywood” is a mixed media photography piece. Size 48″h x 72″w. The image is an original photograph taken on Sunset Blvd in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. High density gator board mounted on frame. The surface is prepared with 2 coats of gesso. The image is torn in numerous places and pieced back together mounting on the gator board with acrylic gel medium. Once dry, the surface of the print is first sealed with a coat of acrylic varnish. When dry, the image is manipulated with texture, paint, charcoal and air brush.

Taken around 1972, this photo was shot with tri-x film outside my little bungalow in Gulfport, Florida. My friend went out and grabbed a chair and stick and started knocking off fresh oranges for an afternoon drink. Mixed Media Photography, 48″w x 60″h. Scanned 35mm film printed on paper, torn and applied to gesso coated board. Image is airbrushed, painted and charcoal rubbed before a final coat of acrylic varnish and then clear encaustic wax added. “Final Turn” receives an Honorable Mention-Morean Art’s Center Members Show

Annual non-juried members’ exhibition held in conjunction with a month-long series of events celebrating member-artists, including workshops, critiques, and works for sale. This years’ members show theme will encourage artists to try something new, to submit a work of art using unorthodox or unusual materials and media, or create a piece that reflects a remote place, unusual combinations, or an innovative idea. The show was judged by Adam Justice, Curator of Art at the Polk Museum of Art.

Salt Creek Studio

I’ve moved into my studio at Salt Creek, a jump from the 500 sqft I was leasing to the 2,200 sqft. The space provides room to do studio shooting, an area exclusively for painting and mixed media work, a digital design area with a two monitor computer system and a small gallery to meet and show work.
